Laganas Beach is a long and wide sandy beach located on the south coast of Zakynthos, in the popular tourist resort of Laganas. It is the largest and one of the most well-known beaches on the island, and is particularly popular with young people and party-goers.
The beach stretches for almost 10 kilometers along the coast, and is backed by a wide strip of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. The sea at Laganas Beach is shallow and calm, making it popular with families with children.
Laganas Beach is also famous for being the nesting site of the endangered Loggerhead sea turtles, known locally as “Caretta-Caretta”. The turtles come to lay their eggs on the beach from May to September, and during this time, certain areas of the beach are cordoned off to protect the nests.
Despite its popularity, Laganas Beach remains a beautiful and stunning location, with crystal-clear waters and fine golden sand. There are plenty of facilities available on the beach, including sun loungers and umbrellas for rent, water sports activities and beachside cafes and bars serving drinks and snacks.
In the evenings, Laganas Beach transforms into a lively party destination, with numerous bars and clubs hosting events and parties that last late into the night. However, for those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere, the quieter parts of the beach further away from the main strip offer a peaceful and scenic spot to enjoy the stunning Zakynthos coastline.
Access to Laganas Beach is easy, with plenty of parking available and regular bus services from Zakynthos town. Overall, Laganas Beach is a must-visit destination for those seeking a fun and lively beach experience, and is also an important location for the conservation of endangered sea turtles.
