Historically this was the centre of Zakynthian culture, with a cafe where noblemen would spend their leisure time. There were many events of historical significance that happened here, as well as many important buildings, a lot of which were damaged in the 1953 earthquake. Nowadays, the square is full of life, with many shops, bars and restaurants.
